Have You Outgrown Your Home? Signs It May Be Time to Move
Wondering if you've outgrown your home? Here are a few signs your house may no longer fit your life and what to consider before deciding to move.
There usually isn't one big moment when you realize you've outgrown your house. It's more like a bunch of little things that start adding up. The kids get bigger, someone starts working from home, everyone suddenly needs the bathroom at the exact same time, and the garage is storing bikes, tools, sports equipment, holiday decorations and who knows what else. Despite buying every organizational bin known to man, you still feel like you're running out of room.
That doesn't necessarily mean you need to move. Sometimes a good purge, better storage or rearranging how you use your rooms really can solve the problem. But if you've reorganized the closets, added shelves, cleaned out the garage and you're still constantly trying to find more space, it may be worth asking whether your home still works for the way you live now.
And sometimes it isn't actually about square footage. You may technically have plenty of space, but it's the wrong space. The dining room has permanently become an office, the guest room is also the workout room, and the garage is somehow doing six different jobs. Multi-purpose rooms are great, but when your family's daily routine is constantly working against the layout of the house, that can be a sign that your needs have changed.
Another thing to consider is whether your home is keeping you from doing things you'd otherwise enjoy. Maybe you used to have people over all the time, but now entertaining feels like a hassle. Maybe your teenagers want friends over, but there isn't really anywhere for them to hang out. Your house doesn't need to be perfect, but ideally it should make your life easier rather than requiring everyone to constantly work around it.
Before You Start a Major Remodel
This is where I'd slow down and do a little homework. If you're considering spending a significant amount of money adding a bedroom, converting the garage, changing the floor plan or building an addition just to make the house work, it's worth comparing that option to moving.
That doesn't mean moving is automatically the better choice. You may love your neighborhood, have a fantastic mortgage rate or simply not want to move. Staying and remodeling may make much more sense. But before spending a lot of money changing your current house, I'd want to know what your home is worth now, what the improvements are likely to cost and what you could buy if you put that same money toward a different home. Then you can make the decision with actual information instead of guessing.
And after looking at everything, the answer may very well be to stay. Reorganize the house. Remodel the kitchen. Add the office. Finish the backyard. Keep the mortgage you already have and enjoy your home. Real estate conversations don't always have to end with someone buying or selling a house.
