The Perfect Saturday in Martinez, CA | Where to Eat & What to Do
Looking for things to do in Martinez, CA? Here's my perfect Saturday with local coffee, restaurants, downtown shopping, outdoor spots and ice cream.
What does a perfect Saturday in Martinez look like? For me, it involves coffee, good food, a little time outside, wandering around downtown and absolutely no requirement that every minute of the day be scheduled. And ice cream. There has to be ice cream.
I'd start at States Coffee on Ward Street, because we're obviously not starting Saturday without coffee. Once properly caffeinated, it's time for actual breakfast at JP's Bistro on Center Avenue. I love going out for breakfast on a weekend when you don't have anywhere you have to be immediately afterward. It's one of those simple things that makes Saturday actually feel like Saturday.
After breakfast, I'd head outside. One of the nice things about Martinez is that there are plenty of options depending on what you're in the mood for. Walk along the waterfront, hit a local trail, or just head downtown and wander around for a while. No agenda necessary. And considering the amount of eating we're going to do today, a walk is probably a good idea.
Lunch and an Afternoon Downtown
When it's time for lunch, I'm heading to Troy Greek Cuisine on Main Street. What should you order? Honestly, anything. But you have to get the tzatziki. I'm not making the rules.
After lunch, I'd stick around downtown and browse some of the shops. That's one of the things I like about downtown Martinez. You don't necessarily need a destination. You can walk around, pop into places and see what you find. At some point, I'd probably stop at Five Suns for a beer.
And then I might go home for a couple of hours.
My idea of a perfect Saturday does not involve scheduling activities from breakfast until bedtime just because we're calling it an itinerary. Go home. Relax. Take a nap. Watch something. We'll regroup for dinner.
Dinner...and Obviously Dessert
For dinner, we're heading to Sumo Grill on Arnold Drive, and I'm getting the grilled salmon. At this point we've already had coffee, breakfast, Greek food and possibly a beer, so you'd think we'd be finished eating.
We are not.
Last stop is Baskin-Robbins on Arnold Drive for a hot fudge sundae with Mint Chip or Jamoca Almond Fudge. Or both. It's Saturday. 😉
And that's pretty much my perfect Martinez day. Nothing particularly fancy. Coffee, good food, a walk, some time downtown, a little downtime, more good food and ice cream. That's actually one of the things I like most about living in Martinez. You don't need to leave town or come up with elaborate plans to have a really nice day.
It's also something I think gets lost when people talk about buying a home. Yes, the house matters, but you're also choosing where you're going to get coffee on Saturday morning, where you'll go for dinner when you don't feel like cooking, where you'll walk the dog and where you'll spend a random weekend when you have absolutely nothing planned. Those everyday things are a big part of what makes somewhere feel like home.
